Amazon Ungating & Category Approval
Evidence-led support to gain approval in restricted categories, gated brands, and controlled ASINs — and to stay sellable once approved.
ReinstateAMZ is an independent advisory firm. We structure the documentation, evidence, and compliance pathway for Amazon ungating and the regulated-product obligations that follow — inside Amazon's stated requirements and the EU / UK regulatory framework. Approval decisions and processing times rest with Amazon and vary by category and account standing. We do not guarantee outcomes.
What Is Amazon Ungating?
Ungating is the process of gaining Amazon's permission to sell where the catalogue is restricted. That permission can operate at three levels: category approval for a gated category such as Grocery or Beauty, brand approval granted by a brand owner, and ASIN approval for individual controlled listings. Amazon uses these systems to reduce marketplace risk — counterfeit goods, unsafe products, and unverified sourcing — so approval turns on legitimate sourcing evidence, accurate documentation, and account standing rather than on paying a fee.
Two Layers: Approval to Sell, Compliance to Remain Sellable
Ungating clears the gate; regulated-product compliance keeps the listings live once they are behind it. Both are addressed together so a category approval is not undone by a downstream compliance gap — including product-safety requirements, EU / UK documentation, GPSR (General Product Safety Regulation) awareness, DSA (Digital Services Act) considerations, and Responsible Person requirements where applicable.
What Are Amazon Restricted Products?
Restricted products are goods Amazon will not let an account list until specific conditions are met. That restriction can attach to a whole category, to a gated brand, or to individual gated ASINs within an otherwise open category. What Amazon requires to lift one depends on the category, the brand, the product, the compliance obligations attached to it, and your account history — which is why a generic checklist rarely reflects what a given case actually needs.
Category Approval vs Brand Approval vs ASIN Approval
These are three separate permissions, each assessed on its own evidence. Category approval authorises your account to list within a gated category. Brand approval is granted by the brand owner, not Amazon's category team — well-known brands are controlled by their owners and typically require direct authorisation. ASIN-level restrictions apply to an individual listing even where the category and brand are open. Brand names are referenced only as illustrative examples; we make no claim of affiliation with, endorsement by, or guaranteed access to any brand or to Amazon.
Why Amazon Rejects Ungating Requests
Most rejections are not clerical. They signal that the case has not demonstrated legitimate sourcing, consistent records, or an account Amazon is willing to extend risk to. Common causes include retail receipts submitted instead of wholesale invoices, unverifiable suppliers, account-health issues, business-name mismatches, incomplete or inconsistent invoices, category-specific compliance failures, missing letters of authorisation, and prior enforcement or counterfeit concerns. The stated reason is often the policy trigger rather than the underlying cause.
What Amazon Reviews Before Granting Approval
Amazon weighs the whole picture rather than ticking a list: supplier legitimacy, account history and health, documentation quality, product authenticity, category-specific compliance obligations, and seller behaviour and customer protection. These factors are assessed together, and a weakness in one can outweigh strength in the others.
Evidence Amazon May Request
Requirements vary by category, so treat the following as examples, never a universal checklist: wholesale supplier invoices, letters of authorisation, supplier and manufacturer documentation, compliance certificates, product testing reports, product and packaging images, and manufacturing or facility information. Amazon may cross-reference documents with your supplier directly. We advise on what a compliant document must contain — we do not supply, fabricate, or alter invoices or certificates on your behalf, and no service can guarantee Amazon's approval.
A Governance-Led Approval Workflow
- Initial Assessment — confirm whether the case is viable now
- Documentation Audit — assess existing records against likely requirements
- Evidence Mapping — match each requirement to a specific document and find gaps
- Category Risk Review — surface compliance considerations before submission
- Submission Support — structure and present the application clearly
- Post-Approval Compliance — address regulated-product obligations so access stays stable
- Ongoing Governance — monitor category access as products and policies change
Amazon Ungating FAQs
What is Amazon ungating?
Ungating is the process of gaining Amazon's permission to list and sell within a restricted category, brand, or product. Amazon gates certain areas of the catalogue to reduce marketplace risk — counterfeit, safety, and compliance exposure — so approval depends on demonstrating legitimate sourcing, accurate documentation, and an account in good standing. Approval decisions rest with Amazon and vary by category and account history.
How is category approval different from brand approval?
They are separate permissions. Category approval (ungating) authorises your account to list within a restricted category such as Grocery or Beauty. Brand approval is granted by the brand owner and authorises you to sell that specific brand's products. ASIN-level restrictions can apply to individual listings even where the category and brand are already open. Many sellers assume one permission covers all three — it does not, and each is assessed on its own evidence.
Can Amazon reject an ungating request more than once?
Yes. There is no limit on how many times a category, brand, or ASIN application can be declined, and repeated submissions that do not address the specific reason for the previous rejection tend to be declined again. Each rejection also adds context to your account record. The productive approach is to identify exactly what Amazon flagged, correct the underlying documentation or eligibility gap, and resubmit a materially stronger case rather than resending the same evidence.
What documentation does Amazon usually require?
It varies by category. Commonly relevant records include genuine supplier invoices (showing business name, address, product detail, quantities, and date), letters of authorisation, compliance certificates or test reports, product and packaging images, and facility or regulatory registration where the category demands it. Amazon may cross-reference invoices with the supplier directly. There is no single universal checklist — the correct evidence set is determined by the category, the product, and the account.
Can you help if I do not yet have compliant invoices?
We can advise, but we cannot supply invoices on your behalf. If your current documentation does not meet Amazon's requirements, we explain what a compliant invoice must contain — format, supplier detail, quantities, and dating — so you can obtain it through your genuine supplier, and we can review draft documentation before you commit to a purchase. We do not fabricate, alter, or create sourcing documents.
Can new sellers get ungated?
Account standing matters. Amazon generally looks more favourably on accounts with some selling history and a clean performance record, though this is not a hard requirement for every category. We assess your account during the initial review and advise whether you are positioned to apply now or which steps would strengthen the case first.
How long does category approval take?
There is no fixed timeframe. Timing depends on the category, the completeness of your documentation, your account history, and Amazon's own review process — which is outside our control. We confirm a realistic expectation for your specific situation after intake rather than quoting a generic turnaround.
Will ungating affect my existing listings?
No. Category approval adds selling privileges to your account; it does not alter or remove your existing listings or performance metrics. The consideration to plan for is the compliance layer that follows approval — regulated products can still be restricted later if downstream obligations such as safety documentation or a Responsible Person are not met.
Is your approach compliant with Amazon's policies?
Yes. We work entirely within Amazon's stated requirements. We do not use prohibited documentation methods, fabricated invoices, or workarounds. Where a case requires documentation you do not currently hold, we advise on how to obtain it legitimately — we do not generate or supply it ourselves.
Do you guarantee approval?
No. Approval decisions rest with Amazon, and no service can guarantee an outcome. Our role is to improve the completeness, consistency, and policy alignment of the submission so the case is presented on its strongest evidentiary footing. We are transparent about this from the outset.
Do you work with international sellers?
Yes. We support sellers across the US, UK, Canada, EU, and Australia. Category requirements and the surrounding regulatory framework can differ between marketplaces, so we advise based on the specific market you are targeting.
We do not take on every case.
If a seller can reasonably complete the approval independently, we will say so. Where additional governance or compliance work is genuinely justified, the correct pathway is explained before any engagement — and no work begins until scope and pricing are confirmed.
